Assistant Director

Primary Function:
This position will provide advising support to international students and scholars and to hiring departments on matters related to immigration and visa regulations, and acclimation to the university and community environments.  The position serves as liaison to a variety of federal and sponsoring agencies and University units to disseminate information on federal regulations on matters related to international students.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Advise international students, scholars, faculty, and staff on a variety of matters including immigration and visa regulations, cultural adjustment, personal matters, financial concerns, and university procedures.
  • Serve as Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the J-1 program.
  • Coordinate informational, social and cultural programs for Fall, Spring, and Summer New International Student Orientation.
  • Assess the needs of and provide specialized counseling for departments hiring individuals requiring visas.
  • Prepare and coordinate the submission of immigration documents which involves complex filing procedures.
  • Research and develop resource and educational materials.
  • Provide training on procedures and regulations to departmental contacts on an individual basis and seminars and conferences as required.
  • Serve as backup coordinator for H-1B and other faculty and staff immigration types.

Organizational Relationship:  This position reports directly to the Director of International Faculty and Staff Affairs who reports to the Director of International Student and Scholar Services who reports to the Associate Provost for International Affairs who reports to the Provost.

Qualifications:
Required Education, Experience and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience in international student and/or scholar affairs and a willingness to act as an effective student/scholar advocate.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from varied administrative, academic, cultural, religious, national, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written, and thorough attention to detail.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident to fulfill ARO responsibilities.

Desired Experience:

  • Familiarity with federal immigration rules applying to F-1 and J-1 students, J-1 scholars, H-1 workers, and other student and employee immigration types.
  • Knowledge of University academic and administrative policies and procedures.
  • First-hand experience working or studying in a foreign country.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, organize, and implement programs.

Salary:  Salary will commensurate with experience.

Appointment Status:  Regular, 100% appointment

Proposed Starting Date:  As soon as possible after the closing date.
