Dr Afeti has served on a number of education policy and planning committees, including the National Council for Tertiary Education in Ghana and the Working Group on Higher Education of the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA). He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Africa-US Higher Education Initiative and a consultant to the African Development Bank, the African Union, ADEA, and UNESCO. As consultant to the AU, he drafted the African Union strategy document for revitalizing technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in Africa.

Dr Afeti has published widely on change and innovation in polytechnic education and training, TVET, and differentiation and articulation in higher education systems. He is the immediate past Secretary General of the Commonwealth Association of Polytechnics in Africa.
