Ms. Aseme, Sophie Davis Class of 2010, was awarded a 2008 Sophie and Leonard Davis Scholarship. She graduated in 2002 from Queens College Secondary School in Lagos, Nigeria and came to the United States in 2003 enrolling at City College in the same year.
During her first semester, Ms. Aseme applied to The Sophie Davis Program and was accepted with the understanding that she would start the program as a first-year student. She worked hard to adjust to the demands of the program and has been an outstanding student.
Even more impressive is the fact that she’s had to work equally hard for her other needs since moving to the U.S. While Ms. Aseme receives financial aid, some support from home and some scholarships, she’s still found it necessary to work to support herself.
She has held a variety of jobs from customer sales representative to a clerk at JamaicaHospitalCenter. Ms. Aseme has also managed to find employment on campus in the computer lab and most recently in the PA Program Office in Sophie Davis.
Her ability to compete successfully in the classroom while being totally on her own places her in a different category from many of her SophieDavisSchool peers.
Ms. Aseme lives in Manhattan and will transfer to SUNY Downstate medical school in 2010.
