Dr. Donald O. Kollisch, M.D., a family medicine specialist with nearly 30 years experience as a teacher, researcher and practitioner, has been named Deputy Dean of The Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at The City College of New York (CCNY).
A native New Yorker, he returns to his home town from Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, N.H., where he was Associate Professor of Family and Community Medicine. In announcing Dr. Kollisch’s appointment, Dr. Stanford A. Roman Jr., M.D., Dean of The Sophie Davis School, cited his “incredible wealth” of knowledge and experience. “We are delighted to have Dr. Kollisch on board. His presence further enhances this institution and its mission,” Dr. Roman added.
As Deputy Dean, Dr. Kollisch will manage curriculum and have oversight of the School’s clinical education programs in community health centers and hospitals. Additionally, he will advise and counsel students in accordance with the School’s academic policies and will assess its educational programs. After graduating from medical school, Dr. Kollisch practiced Rural Medicine in northern New Hampshire and taught at Dartmouth for 11 years. He then spent four years on the faculty of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He returned to Dartmouth 12 years ago.
In addition to his teaching duties at Dartmouth, he served as Director of Faculty Development, Clerkship Director of Family Medicine and Medical Director of the Community Health Center. He also was Medical Director of the Dartmouth-Kosovo Project in International Health. In 2003, Dr. Kollisch was chosen by his fellow Dartmouth faculty to receive the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award and was elected by Dartmouth students to membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He also received the George Liebermann “Master Teacher in Family Medicine” award from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, his alma mater.
Born on Staten Island and raised on Long Island, Dr. Kollisch is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in addition to holding an M.D. degree from SUNY Downstate. “Coming to Sophie Davis is like coming home, and gives me the chance to apply my experience as a medical educator toward helping Sophie Davis and its students achieve a wonderful and unique mission,” said Dr. Kollisch, whose father and wife are CCNY alumni. “This is a tremendous opportunity to serve.”
