Microbiology and Immunology Department

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is responsible for teaching medical students and physician assistant students basic and clinical microbiology, principles of infectious diseases and host immune responses to infection. The objective of these courses is to familiarize students with the growing number of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites) responsible for disease, and the mechanisms by which such organisms produce disease. The application of this knowledge is essential to the treatment of infectious diseases in patients. Each of our faculty members maintains joint faculty appointments within the CUNY Graduate School and actively participates in the teaching of graduate level courses in the Biology and Biochemistry Ph.D. programs. In addition to our medical student and physician assistant teaching responsibilities, faculty participate in the training of graduate students pursuing master's and doctoral level degrees in these programs. Graduate students working towards their Ph.D. degrees have an opportunity to gain teaching experience as teaching assistants in the laboratory components of our medical school and physician assistant courses.

Our faculty are engaged in a wide range of research investigations in areas including immunology, bacteriology, microbial physiology, molecular biology, and genetics. Laboratories and core facilities are located on the 6th and 9th floors of the Marshak Science building. Medical students are encouraged to conduct independent study projects as an elective option by taking advantage of ongoing research opportunities in our laboratories.
