Charge Transfer Reactions
in Proteins

Our research focuses on electron and proton transfer reactions in membrane proteins such as photosynthetic reaction centers and cytochrome oxidase. Experiments follow the light activated electron transfer reactions of photosynthesis in wild-type and modified proteins. Intermediates are trapped by measurements below 100K. These measurements in a system where reaction can be initiated by a flash, allow us to track the motions that accompany reactions in proteins. We also carry out calculations with the goal of understanding how functional properties of proteins arise from their 3-dimensional structure.
We have developed approaches that combine continuum electrostatics and molecular mechanics that are especially suited for the analysis of intra-protein electron and proton transfers.
