Program Description

The Educational Theatre Program offers the following graduate courses of study:
Stream A
: Leads to Initial Certification in Theatre & M.S. Ed in Educational Theatre for candidates who do not currently hold initial teaching certification
Stream B: Leads to Initial Certification in Theatre & M.S. Ed in Educational Theatre for candidates who already hold initial teaching certification in a subject other than Theatre
Stream C: Leads to Professional Certification in Theatre & M.S. Ed in Educational Theatre for candidates who already hold Initial certification in Theatre
Graduate Candidates facilitate activities with children from the Harlem community.
Stream D: Leads to M.S. Ed in Educational Theatre for candidates who wish to obtain a Master’s degree only
Stream E: Leads to Initial Certification in Theatre for candidates who hold an MA in Applied Theatre or Educational Theatre or the equivalent

STREAM A
37-46* credits M.S.ED degree in Educational Theatre with Initial Certification in Theatre for grades Pre K-12  

Candidates who have graduated with an undergraduate degree (B.A.) in theatre comprised of 30-42 credits in: Acting Styles; Directing; Dramatic Literature/Theatre History; Design/Technical Theatre (or the equivalent) would be admitted to Stream A. This stream will provide them with more specific courses in educational theatre as well as education foundations and methods courses (both Generalized and Specialized Pedagogical Cores) required for initial teacher certification in Theatre.

Prerequisites: BA in Theatre or equivalent, liberal arts distribution requirements, including foreign language, LAST

*Up to 9 credits can be waived due to equivalent coursework on the graduate or undergraduate level. Some liberal arts distribution requirements can be satisfied while enrolled in the program.

STREAM B
34 credits leading to M.S.ED degree in Educational Theatre, Professional Certification in Initial Certification area, and Initial Certification in Theatre Pre K-12

Candidates who may not hold a B.A. in theatre but do already hold initial teacher certification (in areas such as early childhood, childhood, or any secondary school content area) would be admitted into Stream B. This stream will lead to professional certification in the area of their initial certification and initial certification in educational theatre.  These students are exempt from the Generalized Pedagogical Core. The state requires 120 hours (20 full days) of student teaching in educational theatre. Students lacking an undergraduate degree in theatre will be required to complete 12 credits of pre /co-requisites of basic theatre courses (Acting Styles; Directing; Dramatic Literature/Theatre History; Design/Technical Theatre) offered in the undergraduate level through City College.

STREAM C
31 Credits M.S.E.D Educational Theatre/Professional Certification in Theatre Pre K-12

Candidates who hold initial certification in Theatre and have three years teaching experience. This stream will provide requisite advanced coursework in Educational Theatre and all requisite content pedagogy courses for professional certification. No student teaching is required.

Stream D
34 credits M.S.E.D Educational Theatre

Candidates who do not wish to obtain certification in Theatre will be admitted to Stream D

This stream will provide advanced coursework in Educational Theatre and all requisite content pedagogy courses for a Master’s level program. No student teaching is required. Students in this stream will be prepared to work as a teaching artist, in higher education, after school programs, community based organizations or other related arts field and non-profit organizations.

Stream E
21 credits:  Initial Certification Theatre Pre K-12

Candidates who are currently enrolled in, or have completed the M.A. in Applied Theatre at Creative Arts Team (CAT)/School of Professional Studies (SPS) CUNY or an equivalent degree, who wish to be initially certified in theatre. These candidates do not currently hold any certification.
