Applying for a Direct Loan

  1. The first step is to submit a Student Aid Report Acknowledgment Letter and any documents requested to the financial aid counselor.

  2. All students who are applying for a loan for the first time at City College must receive entrance counseling. This can be done by going to a workshop at 138th St. & Convent Ave. or the Internet by follow these instructions:

    • Sign on to http://www.dl.ed.gov/
    • Click on "Entrance and Exit Counseling"
    • Click on "Take the Entrance Counseling Session"
    • Read the loan information
    • Take the quiz (You must pass!).
    • Print the "Borrowers Rights and Responsibilities" statement.
    • Bring the signed and dated statement to the Financial Aid Office at CWE.
    • Complete a "Direct Loan Request Form." available at the Financial Aid Office at CWE.
    • Make an appointment to see a financial aid counselor, and bring your SAR and requested documents, the "Borrowers Rights and Responsibilities statement" and the completed "Direct Loan Request" form.

  3. After a loan request has been processed by the Financial Aid Office at the main campus, students will receive a Master Promissory Note (MPN) which can be electronically signed with their federal PIN number or wait to receive a MPN in the mail. Students with an approved Federal Direct Loan MPN will not be required to submit another one. Once approved the MPN will enable to students to be certified for ten years at any college or university in the United States. A student must attach a photocopy of an ID that shows their name and signature to the paper MPN if his or her signature is illegible.

  4. Additional information about these loans is available from the main campus of City College. If the loan does not appear on a student’s tuition bill, the student should bring the bill to the CWE financial aid counselor.

Applying for Work Study, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants and Perkins Loans
Funds for these programs are dependent on the amount of money provided to the University. The University makes the awards..When all the funds are given out for a specific year, there will be no more funds available. It is therefore important to apply for student aid as soon as possible and answer "yes" to the questions the FAFSA concerning loans and work-study.
