Paralegal Studies Certificate Program

The Paralegal Studies Program is designed to educate prospective paralegals in significant areas of law. The program combines law related specialty courses with practical hands-on-experience. Topics include: Legal Document Preparation, Litigation/ Trial Preparation, and Legal Research.

Students will receive a Certificate of Paralegal Studies upon completion of the three required courses and assistance with internships in a professional setting.

Legal Document Preparation

This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive practical training in legal document/form preparation as it relates to New York State legal practice.The course is structured as an "extended practical exercise" for those interested in as paralegal/legal document preparers. Students will learn the fundamentals of document preparation and become familiar forms commonly used in six different legal and administrative practice areas.

Litigation/Trial Preparation

This course is designed to provide students with a general and comprehensive explanation of how a civil action proceeds through the legal system. The course will also focus on the role paralegals play in trial practice.

Students will learn the relation/difference between state and federal civil action, the paralegal's role at each phase of a civil trial, and the advantages of using technology in the courtroom.

Legal Research

This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive practical training in legal research as it relates to New York State and federal jurisdictions. Students will learn how to find, update and cite the law on a written document, how the American legal system functions, how to brief legal cases, how to use the law library, and how to perform computerized legal research.
