General Education Requirements
Step Two: Special Courses
To be completed in your first semester of your Freshman year :
- A Freshman Inquiry writing Seminar (FIQWS): A 6 credit course that combines one of a variety of subjects with intensive writing. Find a subject in any field that interests or intrigues you!
To be completed by the first half of your Sophomore year ( before 45 credits)
- Math and Quantitative reasoning: Quantitative Analysis of the Contemporary World (FQUAN), or Math 15000, or Math 17300, Math 19000 (BA/BFA students), Math 177 (primarily for Biomedical Education majors), Math 180 together with Math 185 (primarily for Education majors), ECO 290 (primarily for Economics majors), PSYCH 215 (primarily for Psychology majors), SOC 231 (primarily for Sociology majors) OR Calculus sequence (BS students) OR Math 195 (BARCH students). BA/BFA students who place into any of he following courses: Math 195, 201, 202, 203, or 205 are exempt from this requirement.
What is a FIQWS?
A FIQWS is a six-credit Freshman Inquiry Writing Seminar required of all students. The FIQWS is divided into two parts. The first part is a seminar about a specific topic, and in any semester an exciting variety of FIQWS are offered: it might concern an exploration of a famous writer or artist, or a particular school of philosophy, a scientific discovery or a key historical event.
The second part of the FIQWS is an intensive writing seminar, in which a professor will guide you in writing essays and research papers concerning the subject of your seminar. You will learn far more than the mechanics of writing; you will also learn to analyze texts, develop clear ideas and arguments, and to research and compose a college-level research essay.

What is a Perspective?
The courses listed in the different Perspectives areas include requirements that will help you develop writing, research, and quantitative skills.
