NEW YORK, October 16, 2006 - Morris Raphael Cohen: The Golden Age of Philosophy at CCNY, 1906-1938, an exhibition celebrating Professor Cohen’s life and achievements, is on view in The City College Morris R. Cohen Library Atrium through November 22, 2006. 

Professor Cohen, for whom CCNY’s major research library was named, earned his Bachelor of Science degree from CCNY in 1900, taught philosophy at his alma mater from 1906 until his retirement in 1938.  These years of active teaching are the focus of this exhibition, which is illustrated by photographs drawn from the City College Archives collection and biographical sources.  Cohen was an innovative teacher in the Philosophy Department who became the most quoted philosopher in America.

An opening reception for this exhibition will be held 6 p.m. Monday, October 23, in the Cohen Library Atrium.  The reception will feature welcoming remarks by City College President Gregory H. Williams and a talk by Professor of Philosophy David Weissman titled “Morris R. Cohen: His Philosophy and Role at City College.”  Professor Weissman is the author of numerous books including, most recently, The Cage: Must, Should, and Ought from Is (2006), and Lost Souls: The Philosophic Origins of a Cultural Dilemma (2003).
