Prospective Students – Getting Started
It is our goal to make service a part of the experience of every UIS student and by doing so, to develop a commitment to civic and social responsibilities within students. These experiences also provide students with opportunities to meet new people, make a real impact in the community, and to learn and lead in real life settings. We encourage new students to consider the Leadership for Life Service program but we provide all students with several ways to get involved with service throughout their time at UIS.
Leadership for Life Service Program
The Leadership for Life Service Wing, also known as L4L, is a service and leadership community within Lincoln Residence Hall. Freshmen admitted to L4L live together, take a class together, and commit to doing service together.
One time service projects are great, but the Volunteer Center urges students to make a longer commitment to service. Our partnerships with Big Brothers Big Sisters and School District 186 allow students to serve approximately once a week for a semester or a year.

UIS Service Organizations
The Volunteer and Civic Engagement Center works with many different Student Service Organizations including Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity, Alternative Spring Break, Red Cross Club, Black Male Collegiate Society, Christian Student Fellowship, Habitat for Humanity and more.

If you need help finding, starting, or participating in service, we’d love to help. We keep an up to date directory of volunteer opportunities in the Springfield area and frequently help students find organizations that match their interests and time commitment. We also keep a directory of non-profit organizations that may have opportunities related to your interests.
Internships, Prior Learning & Service Learning
Other Departments at UIS offer great opportunities to get involved during your time at UIS. The Department of Internships and Prior Learning Services combines academic learning, community service, and reflection. Internships offer off-campus internships, projects, and travel opportunities for undergraduates to apply knowledge and explore career options in the “real” world. Service Learning offers students the opportunity to provide community service to local non-profit agencies while receiving college credit. The Career Development Center connects students to jobs and internships that can help you advance your career before you graduate.
