Art by Jonathan Perkins
Ph.D. in Art History, University of Michigan
M.A. in Art History, University of Michigan
A.B. in Fine Arts (Art History), Harvard University

Jonathan Perkins is currently an Associate Professor of Art History at UIS, where he has been a faculty member since 2002. He enjoys teaching a wide range of art history courses that cover the earliest cave paintings through the most contemporary art. Professor Perkins received his A.B. cum laude from Harvard, writing his honors thesis on Greek coins and sculpture, and earned his MA and PhD in the History of Art from the University of Michigan, where he wrote his dissertation on Paul Klee’s sexual imagery. While he still collects Greek coins (and has written an article on them), Professor Perkins’ scholarly research focuses primarily on modern and contemporary art. He has published and lectured on Paul Klee, Picasso, and the contemporary American artist Robert Natkin. He likes to delve into the personal lives of artists in order to help analyze their artworks. His paper “Childhood and Eros: Parallels between Klee and Freud,” presented at the 2007 College Art Association Annual Conference, was published in revised form in a 2008 issue of Source: Notes in the History of Art. Recently, in February 2014, he gave another talk at the CAA Annual Conference, on Paul Klee’s self-portraits. Currently, he is working on a paper that compares and contrasts the contemporary British painters Francis Bacon and Howard Hodgkin.
