The popular Friday Night Star Parties resume in April 2014. Those dates include: April 4, 11, 18, and 25. Friday Night Star Parties are held from 8 to 10 p.m., weather permitting, at the UIS observatory on the roof of Brookens Library. Related links: More info about the star parties
The Tracy Family Foundation, representing over 60 members of the Tracy Family, has given $15,000 in support of Girl Tech, a technology day camp for middle school girls. Related links: Girl Tech news from 2010
UIS observes Black History Month with many programs and speakers. These events draw students, staff, faculty and people from the community.
Chancellor Koch wrote in her UIS Perspectives column in the Springfield State Journal-Register is the community’s NPR station, WUIS, which is located on the UIS campus. Michael Cheney, professor of communication, got a lot of attention recently because of his expertise on the Beatles. Lowder Governmental Solutions, in business for just a year and led by UIS alumnus John Lowder, is offering internship opportunities (PDF) for UIS students. You probably wouldn’t believed how many places in the region have made similar opportunities. See this list of featured employees that is part of the UIS Applied Study Term.
Thousands of people made their way to the UIS Sangamon Auditorium for two great shows this fall: the Illinois Symphony Orchestra’s Holiday Pops and the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas concert. An annual survey conducted by the UIS Survey Research Office shows Sangamon County employers are not expecting big changes in the employment rate in Sangamon County. Results were released in November at UIS at the local Chamber of Commerce’s annual Economic Outlook Breakfast. Related links: Read the full report (PDF)
Illinois has a new law allowing the concealed carrying of weapons starting January 1, 2014, but universities are exempt from the law. Guns have not been allowed on campus anyway, but we’re trying to make sure that people understand that they cannot carry concealed guns on the UIS campus despite the new law.
