An annual survey conducted by the UIS Survey Research Office shows Sangamon County employers are not expecting big changes in the employment rate in Sangamon County. Results were released in November at UIS at the local Chamber of Commerce’s annual Economic Outlook Breakfast. Related links: Read the full report (PDF)
Illinois has a new law allowing the concealed carrying of weapons starting January 1, 2014, but universities are exempt from the law. Guns have not been allowed on campus anyway, but we’re trying to make sure that people understand that they cannot carry concealed guns on the UIS campus despite the new law. Dozens of UIS students organized themselves to take part in the downtown Springfield Holiday Walk on December 11, 2013. This was part of the effort by student leaders this year to make themselves more visible as the UIS student body downtown and around the city.
UIS hosted what is believed to be the first-ever gathering of “First Citizens” named by the Springfield State Journal-Register. The reception occurred December 14, 2013, in The Recreation and Athletic Center. UIS Chancellor Susan Koch was on the panel that selected Wally Henderson this year.
The campus is closer than you think. Associate Chancellor Ed Wojcicki hears all too often that UIS feels too far away from many places in Springfield. On a gorgeous fall Sunday in October, the first Springfield Marathon came to UIS. It attracted 1,550 runners and was universally praised for its smooth operation. Many thanks to Bill Stokes of the Springfield Road Runners Club for bringing the event to Springfield and UIS. We’re already talking about doing it again next year.
Springfield radio station WFMB (1450 AM) will broadcast nine UIS basketball games this season — seven men’s games and two women’s contests broadcast by John Levin and Tim Schweizer. The games will air on the radio and on the websites UISPrairieStars.com and SportsRadio1450.com. The list of games is here.
As UIS expands, the 15 sworn officers on the UIS Police Department are vigilant about keeping people safe – keeping the campus safe. UIS is among the safest university campuses. We’re very pleased that UIS students helped to collect 11,147 pounds of food for the Central Illinois Foodbank on Halloween night this year – and just as grateful that the community responded so well to our students’ Trick or Treating for Canned Goods. Thanks to all.
