Bill Lear has many titles. During the week he’s the curator of the Illinois State Military Museum in Springfield, at night he’s been a graduate student studying public history – with graduation set for this weekend– and one weekend a month he’s a citizen soldier in the Illinois National Guard. State Senator Kimberly Lightford, a UIS alum, was the featured speaker at the UIS Alumni in Government breakfast earlier this year. Chancellor Koch announced in a message to the campus community January 28 that UIS will keep its traditional nickname, Prairie Stars. Many alumni had opposed a change when the matter was under discussion last fall.
Award-winning journalist Chris Young, a longtime State Journal-Register writer and photographer, earned UIS’s Outstanding Master’s Thesis Award. His thesis was entitled “Response of the Franklin’s Ground Squirrel to Recreational Trail Development in Springfield, Illinois” and he was advised by Associate Professor Tih-Fen Ting. The originator of the popular Friday Night Star Parties, Charlie Schweighauser, was honored by the University of Illinois Alumni Association this month for his distinguished service to the university.
