Meet Our Faculty: Dathan Powell
Assistant Professor of Theatre
Dathan Powell Dathan Powell is a native of Central Illinois and returns to the area to join the growing theatre program at UIS, offering courses in design and technical theatre. He has worked as Scenic Designer for a variety of different productions and venues. Some notable designs include AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, and RENT for Kentucky Conservatory Theatre (KCT) in Lexington, Kentucky; PROOF and YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU for Georgetown College Maskrafters, Georgetown, Kentucky; MACBETH and BAT BOY: THE MUSICAL for the Indiana University Department of Theatre; and THE COMPLEAT WORKS OF WLLM SHKSPR (ABRIDGED) for the Brown County Playhouse in Nashville, Indiana. His career has also led to several designs for operas (DON GIOVANNI, FALSTAFF, THE GONDOLIERS) and for new plays (THE ALIEN FROM CINCINNATI, THE NEW JERSEY BOOK OF THE DEAD), as well as serving as the Production Designer for the short film unDESERVED, produced by the Georgetown College Department of Theatre and Film.
Dathan also works as a professional Technical Director and Scenic Artist. He has supervised construction of shows for KCT and has painted shows at Lexington Children’s Theatre in Kentucky, at the Lincoln Amphitheatre at Lincoln State Park in Indiana, and at the Seagle Music Colony in Schroon Lake, New York.
After completing his undergraduate degree, Dathan began working for Walt Disney World Entertainment, first as a professional intern and later becoming a rigging and lighting lead for the stage show TARZAN ROCKS! His time in Florida also provided him with an opportunity to work as a set painter and to receive certification as a Disney pyro-technician.
Dathan’s interest in fostering the arts has kept him busy with presentations in Stage Management, Scenic Painting, and Model Making for the Kentucky Thespian Society (KTS), certification and presentations involving the use of SketchUp (3-D modeling software), as well as serving on the Board of Directors for the Lexington Ballet Company (LBC). He is a member of the United States Institute of Theatre Technology (USITT).
Dathan comes to UIS after having served as a faculty member in Scene Design and Technical Direction at Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky.
Dathan received his MFA in Scene Design from Indiana University-Bloomington, and his BFA in Theatre from the School of Theatre Arts at Illinois Wesleyan University.
