Today, more than 500 graduates of the PAR department work at the nation’s newspapers, television and radio stations, press agencies, and related communication careers. Our graduates number a host of award-winning journalists, including Pulitzer Prize winners Kathy Best, editor of The Seattle Times, and Deb Singer Peterson, a member of the editorial board of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. While PAR alums have earned numerous other awards, particularly noteworthy is their success in the national reporting/writing contest for excellence in state government coverage sponsored by Capitolbeat, the Association of State Capitol Reporters and Editors. In the 10-year history of the Capitolbeat awards – among the most prestigious honors for Statehouse reporters – PAR alums have won 67 awards, including 21 firsts and the organization’s most prestigious honor, the John Aubuchon Freedom of Information Award.
