MPA Mission Statement:
Our MPA Program strives to advance the public interest and civic engagement. We educate current and future governmental and nonprofit public service professionals through the innovative integration of disciplinary knowledge and skills with practice. Our location in the state capital provides access to a diverse networked community of public affairs scholars, practitioners, and students.
MPA students gain knowledge and skills essential to meeting pressing public problems and engendering success in professional and administrative employment. Our students study organizational structure and political, administrative and policy processes to prepare them for leadership in public service. Most classes are led by tenure-track, full-time faculty or by adjuncts with very specialized knowledge. Using the best teaching methods and technology available to us, our professionally accredited program focuses on educating master’s level students who desire to make a difference through governmental and nonprofit service.
Full time students generally graduate in two years. Program length for part time students varies greatly, but the program can easily be completed part-time in three to four years.
Among those who attended graduate school in a government-related field, 88 percent agreed that their coursework prepared them for their current careers in government. On a separate question, 91 percent said they would prefer to hire someone with a graduate degree in a government-related field. (Governing, July 4, 2014)
