SAVE THE DATE! Pre-Law Center Events will resume in the Fall, but here is a look back on one of the great events of the year.

Tinker3   Tinker1   Tinker2

The UIS Pre-Law Center and UIS Pre-Law Society were honored to host John Tinker of Tinker v. Des Moines, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case that helped establish students’ free speech rights. Mr. Tinker spoke directly about his path to the Court, which was initiated after he was suspended for wearing a black armband in protest of the Vietnam War. He also spoke about the peace movement generally, and called on all in attendance to support robust freedom of speech rights. The event brought students, faculty and the local Springfield community together to hear Mr. Tinker and ask questions. Said one student: “It felt almost surreal to be able to converse with someone who you’ve studied about, and who was so instrumental in the free speech movement.”

After receiving such overwhelming interest and support from students and the local community for an event such as this, the UIS Pre-Law Center intends to host similar events in the future.

Mock Trial Club Informational Meeting – Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at 5:00 p.m.

An informational mock trial club meeting for all interested UIS students will be held Wednesday, October 16, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at UIS in the PAC Atrium (3rd Floor); pizza and soda will be provided!

Mock trial is a competitive game pitting teams of 6 to 10 students against each other in either a civil or criminal trial.  Students are assigned one side of the case and portray 3 lawyers and 3 witnesses in presenting that side’s case.  The students are scored on their performance based on a variety of factors.  Mock trial helps students work on public speaking, critical thinking and problem solving skills.  Mock trial experience can help pre-law students understand concepts and theories pertaining to the courtroom environment and gain litigation experience prior to attending law school.

UIS plans to field two teams, of 6 to 10 students each, this academic year (2013-2014); all UIS students are welcome to try-out!  UIS Mock Trial teams will likely compete in 2 to 3 tournaments plus additional scrimmages from November 2013 through February 2014 to prepare for the American Mock Trial Association Regional Tournaments in February/March 2014.  Financial support for tournament travel will be provided.
