Suzanna Kay Shiner Memorial Scholarship
by Rebecca Buhl
The Suzanna Kay Shiner Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to accomplished students in the music program. The scholarship is possible through the generous efforts of Larry and Catherine Shiner in loving memory of their daughter. This year’s recipients are three outstanding students who demonstrated exceptional ability and hard work in the music program- Stacie Evans, Heidi Nance, and Sarah Quigley.
Stacie Evans Stacie Evans, a native of Downers Grove, Illinois is a multi- talented musician with interests that include twelve years as a percussionist and three years as a singer. Stacie’s interest in music began in elementary school where she learned the cello, but her interests quickly grew and she attempted bass and eventually turned to percussion and singing. Stacie performs in the UIS band, the UIS chorus, and the Blue Rhapsody a cappella group. Stacie chose UIS because of the small class sizes where she knew she would receive one-on-one professor instruction.
Heidi Nance Heidi Nance is a Chatham, Illinois resident, whose first exposure to music was through her mother, a clarinet player, who encouraged Heidi to explore her talent and thus inspired Heidi’s love of art. She found admiration of the arts through the flute, the piccolo, and recently decided to try her musically inclined hand at the violin. Heidi plays in the UIS Chamber Orchestra, where she has the opportunity to showcase her ability along with fellow musicians. Heidi chose UIS because of the location and educational opportunities found on campus.
Sarah Quigley Sarah Quigley is originally from the small town New Athens, Illinois. Sarah is a skillful and versatile musician with a wide range of talents that include singing, song writing, piano, and clarinet. Sarah’s first experience with music was in elementary school where her musical talents quickly developed- she won her first talent contest a mere two years after she started her piano lessons. During high school she had the opportunity to participate in a choir and discovered singing as a new aspect of her musical aptitude. Sarah has multiple credits to her name that consist of UIS Band and Chorus, and she is the founder and president of the Blue Rhapsody a cappella club composed of UIS students and community members.
The UIS campus is honored and fortunate to have these accomplished and talented students. On behalf of the UIS Music Program, we extend a heart felt congratulations to all three Suzanna Kay Shiner Scholarship recipients.
