K-12 Education Technology Specialist

The K-12 Education Technology Specialist endorsement is designed for practicing teachers and administration who are interested in learning more about integrating digital technologies into classroom teaching and learning. The six courses cover the knowledge and skills required for an Illinois Technology Specialist Endorsement which qualifies those who hold it for building and/or district level technology coordinator positions.

A total of 6 courses, as well as passing the ISBE Technology Specialist (178) test is required for completion of the program. Each course may be taken for elective credit in the MTL program.

Higher Education Online Pedagogy

The Higher Education Online Pedagogy graduate certificate is designed to assist higher education faculty who would like to learn how to teach online. Candidates will learn effective practices for teaching online, build course content, and design quality assessments.

A total of 12 credit hours are required for completion of the program. Each course may be taken for elective credit in the MTL program.

Learning Behavior Specialist 1

The Learning Behavior Specialist 1 (LBS1) endorsement is sought after by PK-12 teachers for the purpose of gaining qualification to teach in a special education setting at the level of their existing Professional Educator License/Endorsements. The course titles and descriptions have been approved by the Illinois State Board of Education. The student populations with which they will be endorsed to work are diagnosed with specific learning disabilities, social emotional disorders, mental retardation, physically handicapped, autism, and traumatic brain injury. Each course may be taken for elective credit in the MTL program.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

The purpose of the English as a Second Language graduate certificate program is to provide current K-12 teachers with skills and competency needed to teach effectively in an English as a Second Language environment. Successful completion of the program may lead to an English as a Second Language (ESL) endorsement approved by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) for students holding a current Illinois teaching license, or an ESL graduate certificate for professionals meeting the needs of diverse non-English speaking students within ESL classrooms.

Current Illinois licensed educators, seeking the ISBE English as a Second Language Endorsement are required to complete an additional ESL elective course, for a total of 6 courses along with, a clinical experience. Students must pass the ISBE English as a Second Language test to apply for entitlement.

For ESL graduate certificate seekers, a total of five courses must be completed.

Clinical experience is not required of students who meet the ISBE clinical experience requirement for English as a Second Language based upon the diversity within their school site.

Legal Aspects of Education

The purpose of the Legal Aspects certificate program is to prepare collaborative, proactive educational leaders committed to improving the quality of educational legal knowledge in a variety of organizational contexts. The Legal Aspects certificate program is designed to acquaint UIS students with fundamental legal issues that impact Illinois elementary and secondary school districts. Adequate preparation as a professional educator requires exposure to a variety of the legal components affecting elementary and secondary education.

A total of ten courses are offered within the legal aspects certificate program. Successful completion the graduate certificate requires 18 credit hours.  Courses will focus on select topics school teachers would most likely encounter that are associated with governance in the educational workplace:

  • Local Education Agencies and Boards of Education
