Students and Faculty For transfer students with at least 2 years of coursework to transfer in, the math B.A. program at UIS is a two year, 61 semester hour upper division program. There are 8 core math courses, or 32 semester hours, within the degree requirements. By selecting different technical electives, students can prepare for a wide variety of careers.

Those who plan to teach mathematics or work in engineering or the physical sciences should choose the theoretical cluster:

  • MAT 403 Abstract Algebra
  • MAT 404 Geometry

Those who wish to apply mathematical methods to life sciences, social sciences, or business fields should choose the statistical cluster:

  • MAT 421 Statistical Methods
  • MAT 432 Mathematical Statistics II

Either of these choices provide excellent preparation for graduate work in fields that need quantitative skills.
