How to Enroll in a Modern Languages Course

Please read the instructions below carefully.  Enrollment in Modern Languages courses require departmental approval.   Departmental approval will NOT BE GRANTED if these instructions are not followed.  This is to ensure fairness to all students.

Currently enrolled Modern Languages students

  • Send an email to LNG@uis.edu. No phone calls nor in-person requests will be granted. This is to ensure accuracy for all students.  Approvals will be issued in the order that they are received.
  • Include your first and last name, UIN, course number and section (for example LNG 121-A) and course title (for example, Elementary Spanish I). This is to ensure that you get the correct course that you are requesting.
  • Please indicate in the email if whether or not you have spoken with your academic advisor.
  • We strongly encourage seniors to request WPIs quickly, to avoid a delay in graduation.
  • Students have seven (7) days from the date of their time ticket to register for the course, or their approval will expire. This way, other students who may have been waiting for the same course will have a chance to register. If this happens, the Modern Languages Program recommends finding another section, or to explore options for other courses. Students can also re-request the same course if it is open.

Students who are interested in taking a Modern Languages course

  • Send an email to LNG@uis.edu, with your name, class standing (for example “freshman”), the language you would like to take, and the number of years that you have studied the language. If you have not studied the language, please indicate that in the email.
  • The five languages that the Program currently offers are French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish.

Students who are interested in earning proficiency credit

  • Send an email to LNG@uis.edu indicating the language for which you would like to earn credit.
  • Include your first and last name, UIN, and the language for which you would like to be tested.
  • Proficiency exams are currently available in the following languages: Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
  • Please indicate in your email if you need a test in a language not listed above.  The Program may be able to meet your needs.

Should you need additional information about the language courses, please, do not hesitate to contact the Director of the Modern Languages Program, Dr. Mayra Bonet ( mbone4@uis.edu). There are certain academic issues that Dr. Bonet could answer for you. The Modern Languages Program might have other questions for you as well.

Adhering to these guidelines will help you to expedite the registration process and to better assist you in your academic career!

Thank you!
