UIS Programs: Japanese Language and Culture

Ashikaga, Japan 2015

UIS will offer a 4-6 credit seminar on Japanese language and culture in the early summer of 2015 (dates tba).

The daily schedule in Ashikaga will include instruction in Japanese language and culture on the campus of the Ashikaga Institute of Technology (AIT), UIS’ sister university in Japan.  Each day will also include educational field trips including: the Mayor’s Office and City Hall; the Civil Engineering Dept. and Environmental Studies Program at AIT; the Kurita Porcelain Museum; the Ashikaga Gakko, the oldest university in Japan; the Bannaji Buddhist Temple; a farm or factory; a public school.  In addition, field trips to the Nikko Nature Preserve and Shinto Temple complex and to Tokyo will be included in the seminar.  Participants will also be able to experience Japanese martial arts, flower arranging, Buddhist meditation, a tea ceremony, calligraphy, and Japanese cuisine.

Lodging will be in a combination of hotels, guesthouses and home stays.  All expenses, lodging, meals (with the exception of a few lunches), local and international travel, and entrance fees are included in the program fee (tuition and university fees are not included in the program fee).  It is anticipated that the program fee will be approximately $3300, dependent upon international airfare.

The Seminar is open to the public.  Applicants need not be degree-seeking students at the University of Illinois at Springfield.
