CAP 354: Spaces of Encounter in East Asia
Credit Hours: 3
Term Year: Spring 2013 Monday, Wednesday 2-3:15

This class takes as its theme intercultural exchange in East Asia from pre-modern times through the present. The class investigates the different ways that cultures have interacted historically—what happens when two cultures meet? This class also provides students a foundation in the traditions and modern transformations of China, Japan, and Korea, and opportunities for students to reflect on their own cross-cultural experiences. This course is an interdisciplinary, team-taught course that provides a foundation for understanding East Asia through the disciplinary lenses of history, economics, religion, art/architecture and anthropology. Further, the course incorporates understanding the symbolic and aesthetic values of East Asia at the intersection of the pre-modern and modern, as demonstrated in a variety of media, including poetry, travel writing, and architecture.

This class includes an optional study abroad opportunity to Beijing and Harbin, China, Seoul, Korea, and Ashikaga, Saitama, and Tokyo, Japan.
