Meet Your Classmates

On a campus our size, you’ll get to know your classmates, and you’ll learn many of them participate in a variety of activities at UIS.

Here are a few of the faces you may see around campus:

Paige Heiser, Business Administration, Marketing minor

Paige Heiser Full

Hometown:  Fairbury, IL

Activities: Student Activities Coordinator, Leadership for Life Sustainability Committee Chair, Alternative Spring Break President

Best part of going to college: There are a lot of opportunities to take advantage of. The challenge is knowing which ones to take and which ones to pass up, but ultimately your experience is up to you.

Favorite activities on campus:  Springfest, comedy performances, acoustic performances

Most rewarding college memory so far: Alternative Spring Break and LeaderShape are my two most rewarding college memories so far. I was chosen to represent UIS at LeaderShape, a weeklong leadership conference, as a freshman. It was a huge honor as you are only allowed to attend this conference as a participant once in a lifetime!

Best thing about UIS: Leadership opportunities are abundant, and the tight-knit community makes it possible for students to step up and take those roles.

Advice for prospective students: I challenge you to get out of your comfort zone! You never know what lies ahead if you don’t dive right in.

Jordan ‘JC’ Brown, Communication

Hometown: Peoria, IL

Activities: Forensics Team, Spirit Team, Rip the Runway 2013, LGBTQ Students of Color

Favorite activities on campus: Springfest and Forensics  [a club that highlights students' speech & debate skills]

Most rewarding college memory so far: Winning a national championship in Forensics. I have worked very hard at Forensics and it solidified that hard work and gave me a national title!

Best part of going to UIS: The size of the campus reminds me of a small town, where everyone knows you and gives you a smile. Seeing those consistent faces is very reassuring.

Advice for prospective studentsSeek advice and counseling for anything. Going through college without help and a core group of people around is not safe. Also, be social. We learn a great deal in those classrooms, but we learn a great deal more just by being active on the campus and in the community
