The iPhone and iPad at UIS

iPhone/iPad
Apple’s iPhone and iPad has generated a great amount of interest on university campuses. ITS at UIS is working hard to maximize the benefits of the iPhone for members of the UIS community who choose to use the iPhone.

When you browse to the UIS website from an iPhone, a pop-up message allows you to choose the iPhone-enabled version of our website. If you have ideas for additional mobile site content, please contact the Office of Web Services.

iPhone / iPad Developer University Program

ITS is pleased to announce that the University of Illinois Springfield is now a part of Apple’s iPhone Developer University Program.

Apple iMacs running the latest version of the OS X operating system along with the iPhone SDK (which includes the Xcode IDE, iPhone Simulator, and a suite of additional tools for developing applications for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch) can be found in:

UHB 2000 lab
Media lab (BRK 180)
Multimedia Classroom (BRK 141B)

By establishing an iPhone provisioning user account, the iPhone Developer University Program allows UIS users to to deploy applications that they develop to their devices.

Using your iPhone / iPad at UIS

  • Accessing the Internet with iPhone/ iPad1.
  1. Use the wireless telephony EDGE/G3 data service that comes with your phone data plan
  2. Use the built-in wireless adapter to join the UISWiFi network

Accessing the Internet with iPhone / iPad

You have three options for using the internet with the iPhone.

1. Use the wireless telephony EDGE (2.5 G)/HSDPA (3G) data service that comes with your phone data plan.
[Note: This option is not available on the Wi-Fi only iPads.]

2. Use the built in [802.11*] wireless adapter to join the UISWiFi network on your iPhone / iPad.

If you are on the UIS campus you can join the UISWiFi network to access the Internet. To access the Internet using the UISWiFi network on campus from your iPhone network, do the following:

i) On the iPhone, press the Home button.

ii) Choose Settings.

iii) Tap on Wi-Fi. Make sure Wi-Fi is ON. It should detect UISWIFI and tap Join.

iv) Enter your NetID and Password as it prompts you.

You can now browse from your iPhone using UISWiFi.

NOTE: If the UISWiFi network is not detected automatically then under Wi-Fi Networks you can tap on other and then add a wireless network with the name UISWiFi and with security of “WPA2-Enterprise” and then join.

Getting your UIS mail, contacts, and calendars delivered to your iPhone / iPad

i) Choose Setting.

ii) Choose Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

iii) Choose Add Account.

iv) Choose Microsoft Exchange enter the following information:

  • Email: your UIS email ID [e.g., jsmit1@uis.edu]
  • Domain: UISAD
  • Username: “your UIS NetID”
  • Password: “your UIS Password”

v) Choose Next. The verification process will begin and on the screen that is displayed, enter the following information if it is not automatically filled in:

  • Server: webmail.uis.edu.

vi) Choose Next. The verification process will begin.

vii) On the Exchange screen that appears, turn ON/OFF the UIS services that you want delivered to your iPhone.

ix) Choose Save. This completes the set-up process.

To view your UIS email:

1. Tap on the Mail icon.

2. Tap on your “account name“.

3. Tap on Inbox.

4. Tap on an email message to display the message.

Connect to UIS via VPN on your iPhone / iPad

Cisco AnyConnect
Connecting to UIS using Cisco AnyConnect VPN on the iPhone / iPad.
[Note: This application will NOT work when you are on campus.]

1. Download and install Cisco AnyConnect from the Apps Store

2. Locate the Cisco AnyConnect icon on your iPad and launch the app

3. Once you launch the app you will be prompted to select OK to enable the use of the VPN
client

4. After you have enabled Cisco AnyConnect, click on the option Add VPN Connection

5. You are now presented with the VPN Connection box where you will add the following information

  • Description: UIS VPN
  • Server Address: https://secureconnect.uis.edu
  • Network Roaming: On
  • Use Certificates: Off

6. Once the information has been added, click Save

7. Now that you have entered in the VPN settings you are ready to connect by sliding the On/Off switch On next to AnyConnect VPN

8. Once you have turned the VPN on you will be prompted with the Authentication window. Fill in the information and click Connect

  • Group: UISAD
  • Username: UIS NetID
  • Password: UIS Password

9. You are now ready to use your iPad to access campus services such as Remote Desktop. All you have to do is click your Home Button and open the application to take advantage of campus services.

Remote Desktop Connection on your iPhone / iPad

Wyse Pocket Cloud
[Note: When using the remoted desktop app from off campus you will need to connect to campus using the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client.]

1. Download and Install Wyse PocketCloud (Remote Desktop) – RDP / VNC from the App Store.

2. Locate the Wyse Pocket Cloud icon on your iPad and launch the app

3. Once the app launches, select the Advanced Users option for setup

4. Next, press the  + [plus button] to add a new connection

5. You will then be prompted to Choose a Connection Type. Select Manual Connection then RDP as the Connection Method.

6. Now that the method has been established, you will need to provide the Connection Settings

  • Nickname: Work Computer [required]
  • Host: your computer name [required]
  • Username: NetID
  • Password: leave this blank
  • Domain: UISAD
  • Resolution: Automatic
  • Keyboard Layout: English (United States)

7. You are now ready to connect to your computer. In the list of computers make sure your computer is selected then click Connect. Next you will be prompted to enter your Password and click Submit

8. Now that you are connected to your desktop you have a special toolbar at the bottom of the screen. These tools allow you to disconnect from your computer, keyboard access, right click function, screen zoom, and hide the toolbar.

9. When finished click on the first icon in the toolbar and choose Disconnect

UIS’s Blackboard on your iPhone / iPad

About Blackboard Mobile Learn

Blackboard Mobile Learn for the Apple iPhone and iPod touch is an application that lets users interact with their Blackboard courses and organizations in their iPhone or iPod touch Mobile device. The Blackboard Mobile Learn app makes it easier to post to a discussion board, check class announcements, read new assignments, check grades, and many other activities.

[Note: Blackboard Mobile Learn is only availble when connected using a Wi-Fi Netwrok.]

Getting Blackboard to your iPhone / iPad Bb Mobile Learn in the Apple App Store

i) Download through the Apple iTunes App Store [on your computer or on your iPhone/iPad] by searching for Blackboard Mobile Learn.

ii) Once you are done with download, launch the Blackboard Mobile Learn app.

iii) Now that you have the app open in the search box type in bb.uis.edu, then click on the University of Illinois at Springfield link below the search field.

iv) Next you will need to enter your NetID and Password and press Go.

v) You are now logged in to Blackboard and you are presented with a list of your courses. To see more information about the course click on a course title and you will then have access to all of the items your instructor has made available for you.

Known Issues

  • iPad does not reconnect to Wi-Fi upon wake up. - If you
    experience this problem select Settings then Wi-Fi then click on the blue arrow next to the selected Wi-Fi access point then select Renew Lease.
