What’s New in the GIS Laboratory

GIS Student Presents at the UIS STARS Symposium

Over the past two terms, undergraduate student Nate Hoyle has worked hard to create a comprehensive map of tree diversity on the UIS campus.  His work involved collecting GPS waypoints with his smartphone into a previously designed geodatabase structure using the ArcGIS Online application.  Around 2400 total trees were surveyed, providing information about the spatial trends, species, species group, and percentages of tree types around campus.  Nate found significant differences in the biota of the ‘older’ East side of campus with the ‘newer’ West side.  Nate’s next goal is to assess the overall biodiversity of campus by looking at bird, animal, and human components of campus;  ultimately, he hopes that his efforts will influence future planning of campus facilities and grounds.

Congratulations to Nate on a job well done!

GIS Web Applications

The GIS Lab has been busy lately, creating GIS Web Applications utilizing ArcGIS Online technology as well as ArcGIS Server 10.1 to host Web Applications on our new state-of-the-art GIS Server. Our web maps include a UIS campus tree survey, an Emiquon River Otter latrine site map, a map displaying GIS applications in the reconstruction of the Medieval Barking Abbey in London, a Sangamon County, IL hazards map, and an Illinois coal mine map. We have provided links to these applications on our ‘ GIS Web Applications‘ page. The page also contains detailed descriptions of the each project. Check back for more GIS Web Applications in the future.
