The UIS Forensics Team is made up of undergraduate students who travel around the state and country competing in speech and debate competitions. For the speech category, students can choose to compete in Public Address Events, Limited Preparation Events, and Interpretive Events. Students do not need any prior Forensics experience in order to join the team. However, students must be willing to commit the time to not only attend the competitions (usually on the weekends) but also work with a coach every week to ensure the speeches are performance-ready at all times. Each semester, the team will travel to approximately four tournaments in and around Illinois, and also hopes to make it to a national tournament at the end of each academic year.
The team returned in 2011 after a three-year hiatus to win an incredible 28 individual and team awards. This included seven awards from Novice Nationals at LaFayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania in March 2012.
The UIS Forensics Team is a member of the American Forensic Association, the National Forensic Association, and the National Parliamentary Debate Association.
