Teaching statement: Students have the opportunity to think, to develop, and to use their brains in the English Department at the University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS). Not to be taught to think, but to be stimulated to think, to discover the excitement of taking on a new idea, and to reach a deeper level of understanding and sophisticated thought. One of life’s great rewards is to say ‘I understand…I know.’ What we try to do in English at UIS is to provide students with rigorous and precise thought habits, and the intellectual tools needed to sharpen their thinking.
