Considering the expressive loss of biodiversity determined by anthropogenic activities on aquatic environments, studies have been conducted, especially in the northern hemisphere, not only for monitoring environmental impacts, but also for the restoration of degraded areas by decades of alternative land, agriculture generally. The objective of this study was to characterize the ciliates communities in a newly restored floodplain lake, Thompson Lake, located in the floodplain of the Illinois River during the three years following the start of the restoration process. Lake water was sampled biweekly from 2008 to 2010. The samples were fixed with glutaraldehyde and 1% and analyzed using an inverted microscope by the Uthermol method. Eleven orders of ciliates were recorded throughout the study, and Hymenostomatida and Oligotrichida were the most frequent and abundant in all years of study. Other orders as Prostomatida and Gymnostomatida were also frequent, but at a lower level of density. The ciliates abundance ranged from 1,171 cells / L in May 2008 and 71,990 cells.L-1 in October 2009. Temporally, although densities were quite variable over the years, higher values of this community attribute were observed during the spring and summer. Although the ciliates community shows remarkable seasonal changes in abundance, some alterations from the beginning to the end of the study, such as the relative contribution of different orders to the total abundance, seems to be related to the restoration process of natural conditions in Thompson Lake.
