Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum

Lincoln Sites

Springfield attracts thousands of visitors every year to its Lincoln sites, including the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, the Lincoln Home National Historic Site in Springfield, and Abraham Lincoln’s Tomb. Nearby, you’ll also find New Salem State Historic Site, a living history museum that features the post office/store Lincoln ran before moving to Springfield.

Recreational Sites

The central Illinois area offers canoeing, hiking, and other outdoor recreation. Emiquon specifically is fast becoming a lotation for fishing and boating. Hiking on the bluffs above Therkildsen

Dickson Mounds State Museum

Dickson Mounds, within walking distance of the Therkildsen Field Station, offers many summer activities and historical events, including the Morton archaeological site.

The Nature Conservancy Emiquon Restoration Project

The Nature Conservancy‘s professional restoration site managers have an office next door to the Therkildsen Field Station, so REU participants will have plenty of opportunity to interact with them and learn about this important environmental undertaking.
