Scholarship Funds

Chapin Endowment Fund

In addition to funding a Master’s Thesis award each year, the Chapin Endowment Fund also provides for a History Award. Although not technically a scholarship (the accounting and procedures vary slightly), the fund still offers you a chance to add your support to a student who is working on a history research project.

J. Porter and Alyce V. Coble History Scholarship Fund

Jim Coble enjoyed visual arts, books and visiting museums. He was a deeply religious gentleman. At the time of his passing, he was pursuing a Master’s degree in history at UIS. James P. Coble, through his estate, established the J. Porter and Alyce V. Coble Family Memorial Scholarship Fund, in memory of his parents. The scholarship will be shared in rotation with UIS Visual Arts, Catholic Charities, and UIS History. Your gift to this fund will add funds to the history scholarship.

John W. Holtz Memorial Scholarship Fund

Since 1989, Mr. Holtz served as a professor of library instructional services at UIS. His responsibilities at Brookens included general reference service, teaching the Library Research Methods course, helping the history, political science, public administration and management information systems departments with instruction and collection development and serving as library specialist for online database searches. He served as chair of the Library Program Department from 1991-93 and in 2000-01. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1981, and was an avid Notre Dame football fan. He earned his Master of Science in European Study and his Masters in Library Science from Indiana University. His had a special interest in military history, particularly the American Civil War, and while at Brookens he organized war gaming and simulations for students, and enjoyed visiting Civil War battle sites. His named scholarship supports any undergraduate student who demonstrates a financial need, but reflecting his own personal interest in history, the award is usually given to a student doing a history research and writing project.

Mary and Nelson Howarth Scholarship

Nelson Howarth was a respected Springfield attorney and three-term mayor who was instrumental in convincing the Illinois General Assembly to establish the UIS (then Sangamon State University) campus in 1969. He later taught a course in municipal law and administration at SSU. The Mary and Nelson Howarth Memorial Scholarship was originally established by the family and friends in honor of his life and work. In later years, his wife’s name was added by the family, who continue to support the scholarship through generous donations. Applicants for the scholarship must be in good academic standing with a major in Public Administration, Public Affairs Reporting, Environmental Studies, Political Science or History.

Myers Access Illinois Scholarship

Polly Myers went to college on a shoestring budget, taking nineteen years to complete her degree. Along the way, she received a $368 scholarship, which she says helped her achieve her dream of a degree.  Now she and her husband Brigadier General Louis L. Myers, Jr. (RET), have passed that help forward by creating a matched Access Illinois Scholarship for UIS students with financial need, with preference given to history majors.
