A Place for Diversity to Thrive
From its earliest days as Sangamon State University, the University of Illinois Springfield has been a place where many different kinds of students can come, feel at home, and successfully achieve their educational dreams. Through your gifts, you can help The Diversity Center welcome students to campus, regardless of students’ race, ethnic or national origin, religion, gender, or sexual identity.
Diversity Center Programs
Cram-a-Thon Study Sessions
Twice a year, the Center opens its doors from 10 pm to 2 am and invites students in for a study session. The Center provides sandwiches, nachos (“students love the nachos,” according to Executive Director Clarice Ford), cookies, and lots of coffee. Around 70 students attend. Cost for food: $170/cram-a-thon
The Host Family Program
With this newly reorganized program, a local family becomes a host to a UIS student, providing an occasional meal, including the student on a family outing, or giving other support as the student works toward a degree.
This has been especially valuable for international and first-generation students, both of whom enter an unfamiliar world when they attend UIS.
Your gifts to the program can help with administrative costs and provide funds to help pay for outings that host families arrange. Remember to put a note in the comment box that you would like your gift to support the Host Family Program.
To help develop student leaders for the many Diversity Center programs, the Center coordinated a weekend leadership retreat at Camp Cilca, providing valuable skills training and insights. The retreat cost about $750, and your gifts toward that amount will help us offer it again.
Necessary Steps Mentoring Program
A living-learning community for first-generation students, who are among the very first in their families to attend college.
Terri Jackson Book Award Fund
Provides emergency money for students with financial need to purchase books. Read more.
