Make a Difference for Biology Students
Your gift in any amount to the funds below provide support for biology students. You can use the Donate button to give online.
Please notice that UIS has no scholarships that specifically target Biology students. If you are interested in being the first to create a scholarship for Biology, please contact our office (info at the bottom of this webpage). Thank you!
Biology Department Fund
This fund provides money for special opportunities or extraordinary needs
- Faculty and students can travel to a conference to present their research.
- Faculty can take part in a special opportunity to update their skills. Professors need to be aware of the latest developments in their field, so that they can pass this knowledge on to their students.
- The department can purchase special equipment, test materials, resources, or training modules to help our students attain success and achieve their goals.
These activities and others like them enrich our students immeasurably, enhancing the education they receive at UIS—but we could not do any of them without the discretionary money given to this fund.
Electrophysiology is the study of the electrical properties of biological cells and tissues. In the new UIS electrophysiology lab, Dr. Stephen Johnson and his students will be studying the biological activity of venom components, known as toxins. Specifically, they will focus on the venom’s ability to alter the electrical properties of neurons. This kind of research can help in the development of new drugs to treat neurological disease such as Parkinson’s. You can help support this exciting research by giving to this fund.
Friends of Emiquon Fund
This fund helps to meet the operating expenses of UIS’ Emiquon Field Research Station (link), where students, faculty, and community members—including researchers from other institutions of higher education and students from area schools—can take part in research and educational activities related to the floodplain restoration occurring at Emiquon.
K Fund for Scientific Equipment (CLAS)
The net income from the Fund is used to purchase “big ticket” laboratory equipment in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at UIS. The equipment purchases shall be restricted to laboratory equipment for the physical or biological sciences programs that would be used, though not exclusively, in the undergraduate laboratory courses. The expenditures are not necessarily made each year, but rather the net income is allowed to reinvest in the principal of the Fund until the principal reaches at least $30,000 in 2003 dollars adjusted for inflation. This fund is not yet fully funded (it has not reached $30,000). Your investment could make the difference.
