Relationships

Two looking at book Going away from home for the first time presents many exciting opportunities and some uncomfortable situations that we’ve never encountered before. One of these is making new friends. Most of us went through life attending the same schools with the same kids with whom we had a lot in common. College ends all that, and the adjustments can be tricky!

There are many different types of relationships that a person may enter into in life: parent/child relationships, work relationships and partner relationships, to name a few. The Counseling Center staff understands the issues that arise in relationships and can to help you deal with them.

Everyone deserves to be in a safe and healthy relationship.   Loveisrespect.org provides resources for teens, parents, friends and family, peer advocates, government and law enforcement officials and the general public.  They also staff the National Dating Abuse Helpline.

A “bad relationship” is a relationship with someone who makes you feel less than you are or who makes too many demands, draining your energy and time without giving anything back. There are those people who are addicted to the idea of having to be in a relationship at all times. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Counseling Center web site defines how addictive relationships are different from healthy relationships and includes a quiz to give you a more objective view of your own relationship.

It is never easy when a relationship ends. There are things you can do to get through this difficult time. The HelpGuide.org provides coping skills for healing after a breakup.

How healthy are your relationships? Check out the Carroll College Counseling Center website for healthy relationship information.
