Curriculum Overview

Knowledge, accuracy, and problem-solving skills are required for CLS students.

The UIS Health and Sciences Building These attributes depend on a firm foundation in math, chemistry, and biological sciences, followed by education in the clinical areas of hematology, chemistry, immunohematology (blood banking), microbiology, and immunology.

In addition, familiarity with the use of computers and good organizational skills are required.

Students complete clinical experiences at the following hospitals and other hospitals and clinics:

  • Memorial Medical Center in Springfield
  • Methodist Medical Center in Peoria
  • Decatur Memorial Hospital in Decatur
  • University of Illinois Chicago Medical Center
  • Mason District Hospital in Havana, IL
  • Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney, IL
  • St. Anthony Health Center in Alton, IL
  • Graham Hospital in Canton, IL
  • Central Illinois Community Blood Center in Springfield
  • Springfield Clinic in Springfield

Applicants need to consider transportation to and housing at clinical sites outside Springfield.

In the unlikely event that there are more students than clinical rotation spots, the students with the best GPAs in courses in the CLS program will get clinical rotations first. This has NEVER happened at UIS and we are committed to finding new clinical rotation sites in the event that there are insufficient placements for all students.
