A Message From the Dean

Welcome to the College of Business and Management at the University of Illinois Springfield.

We are located in University Hall with the latest high tech classrooms, seminar rooms, and excellent offices for all faculty.

The College of Business and Management’s mission provides the college and programs with the direction, the basis for continuous improvement, and the provision for admissions decisions and student services needed to serve stakeholders.  Our focus is on organizations and how they operate internally, externally, and in a global environment.  As a College of Business and Management, we must have the academic rigor and applied relevance to carry out our mission in a dynamic environment.

Warren Bennis said it well:  “People who cannot invent and reinvent themselves must be content with borrowed postures, secondhand ideas, fitting in instead of standing out.”  Teaching effectiveness is our primary mission and is strongly supported by scholarship and service. We work to strengthen and encourage our faculty and staff to invent and reinvent themselves in order to be academically rigorous and real world relevant.

What are some of the actions we have taken to reinvent ourselves?  In the past seven years, we have recruited over thirty new faculty members for new positions or to fill vacant positions (e.g., due to retirement).  We changed the curriculum throughout college programs.

We have gone global.  For example, in the past four years we have had twelve faculty engaged in teaching, delivering seminars, or working with over fifty UIS MBA students in China in the past four years.  In terms of scholarship, we reported in our self-study for AACSB accreditation that in the past five years our faculty had 775 scholarly contributions which were either presented or published in journals, proceedings, books, and chapters of books. Our faculty averages 4.8 journal articles or the equivalents over that five year period.

To support academic rigor and relevance, we now have the Ameren Distinguished Professor, Dr. Karl McDermott, and the newly approved Center for Business and Regulation.  We expect that with Dr. McDermott and the Center, we will expand our ability by providing more educational and research services to the university and to the broader private and public sector communities.  We will expand curriculum to include courses in regulatory issues and we will administer a one-week course on behalf of the Rate Committee of the American Gas Association. The course is designed to develop greater understanding of the gas industry, its operations and regulations, particularly as they relate to utility ratemaking.

In short, we are here to make a difference.   We value the close ties with our graduates and business leaders.  We intend to keep working to help our current and future students to advance in their careers and achieve their goals.  We can only do that if we invent and reinvent ourselves as academics living in a dynamic world.

We welcome you to the College of Business and Management.
