What is the “Foot in the Door” Fair?
The 2013 Foot in the Door Fair will provide internship, part-time, and volunteer opportunities to UIS students, allowing students to make valuable connections with a wide variety of employers and organizations.
What kinds of opportunities will be available at he “Foot in the Door Fair”?
The employers and organizations attending the 2013 Foot in the Door Fair will be marketing Internship, Part-Time Employment, and Volunteer Opportunities that are immediately available. While some employers attending the event may only have part-time jobs, others may have all types of opportunities! Check the Foot in the Door website for the listing of registered recruiters and available opportunities. The day of the event, on September 26th, you will stop by a registration table to receive a name tag, a program listing the employers present, and other important information.
Can I look for full-time employment at the Foot in the Door Fair?
Employers are allowed to market their full-time opportunities; however, the event is specifically designed to present part-time job, internship, and volunteer opportunities. The employers and organizations attending will be actively seeking to speak with students about these main opportunities, and possibly more!
How do I register for the event?
Just stop by one of the registration tables the day of the event before you get started! Registration cards and programs will be available at the registration tables.
Is there a cost to attend?
The event is free to attend for all UIS students.
What should I expect the day of the event?
In previous years, representatives from over 40 off-campus organizations, approximately 20 on-campus departments, and 300 students attended the event! The layout of the event is similar to that of a trade show, with the employers expecting the students to approach them and engage in conversation about career opportunities! This year we are hoping to have more representatives attend, offering many more varieties of opportunities to students!
What should I bring?
Bring a polished “30-Second Elevator Pitch” outlining your name, education goals/experience, employment and volunteer goals/experience, and other transferable skills! Also, bring plenty of copies of your resume, networking/business cards, pens to write with, paper to write notes on after you visit with organizations, and a positive attitude! Don’t forget to SMILE at the event…it is meant to be both fun and meaningful!

What is the dress code?
The dress code for the event is business casual. Dress as if you were going to interview for the position you are looking for! Dress pants, collared shirts, knee-length skirts, solid colors and matching accessories (shoes and belt) are appropriate. Visit our dress code page for more information.
When should I arrive to the event?
Arrive approximately 10 minutes before the event, around 10:50 a.m., to understand the layout of the event and to locate registration tables, interviewing rooms, etc. Arriving early to the event will allow plenty of time to visit as many tables and representatives as possible.
Will I be interviewed at the event?
Interviewing space may be available for employers and organizations to take advantage of during the event, if they choose. Some representatives may choose to conduct their interviews at another time.
What do I say to representatives at the event?
A typical conversation at this event may simply rely on you to deliver your “30-Second Elevator Pitch” outlining your name, education goals/experience, employment and volunteer goals/experience, and other transferable skills. Make sure to ask questions and be interactive! Be prepared to also answer questions, as this event can and does serve as a “screening” for employers and organizations. Be sure to give representatives your contact information, whether in the form of a resume or a business card, and to also get the contact information of all representatives you speak with. Don’t forget to show your interest in an employer by asking them questions about their organization and potential opportunities!
What should I do after the event?
After the event, sending a thank-you note can make a huge difference in developing a professional relationship and can increase your chances at getting hired or accepted for an opportunity. Make sure to follow all directions the employer and organization has outlined for the next steps in the application process.
