AST Student KatherinePalzer

My name is Katie Palzer, and I am a Business Administration major graduating after Fall 2013. I completed my internship at UIS during the summer of 2013. My internship was at University Student Financial Services and Cashier Operations (USFSCO). A simple name would be student accounts, and I learned that is has an integral role at the University.

Before my internship, I worked at USFSCO answering phone calls and e-mails. My internship required a new learning experience with college level work that emphasized applying what I had learned as a BBA student. My internship allowed me to focus on the cashier side of USFSCO. Part of my internship also involved interaction with freshman and transfer students at orientation – I gave a speech and answered questions about how to set up direct deposit and authorize payers.

Working on the cashier side of USFSCO, I learned:

  • How to deposit a check to a student account
  • How to process department payments
  • How to process parking meter coins and where to log information
  • The process involved in opening and closing registers, including forms to be filled out to close the register for the day
  • How to set up scheduling for cashiers including breaks

For the new student/transfer orientation I had these learning experiences:

  • Developed flyers for parents and students
  • Organized information and then gave a speech on how to sign up for direct deposit
  • Communicated with students at orientation and discussed what an Authorize Payer is and how to sign one up

I entered UIS as a transfer student, and at my previous college an internship was not required although it was highly recommended. I appreciate that an internship experience was part of my BBA at UIS because after completing the AST, I feel more prepared to enter the workforce. I was able to learn a completely different side of the business operation that I would not have experienced if I had not pursued this opportunity.
