Beginning in May 2007, AAS sponsored UIS’ Global Seminar Experience in Jamaica. Dr. Kemayo took students to Treasure Beach, JA for a three-week service learning experience. Of course, service and learning are not all it’s about: YEAH MON!

Angela Winand Fall 2006: UIS welcomes Angela Winand as the newest faculty to join the AAS program. Dr. Winand earned a Ph.D. in American Culture at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 2003. Her professional/research interests include

the History of Creoles of color in New Orleans and Washington, D.C., with a special interest in gender. In her spare time, she also enjoys

cooking, needlepoint, and marathon sessions of Alias, Upstairs, Downstairs, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Reverend Carey Grady performs a libation with water at the start of the HipHop Symposium. In November 2005, AAS hosted “In the Mix: Cross-Dialogues Regarding HipHop Culture,” a two-day Symposium designed to facilitate discussion about what has been called “one of the most important phenomena in popular culture since television.” Activities included panel presentations, breakout discussions, performances, films and critiques, a fashion show, and an awards banquet.

Rachell Anderson

In October 2005, AAS faculty Jan Droegkamp was recognized by the University at a faculty luncheon for her contributions to academia in the form of poster presentations. Dr. Rachell Anderson was also recognized for her academic achievements.
