“Advising really helped me find direction!” —Sarah A., Class of 2010
advisor The Office of Advising Services Information and Support (OASIS) serves entering first year students and undecided students.
Professional Academic Advisors help students determine courses each semester to complete general education requirements and prepare for a major course of study. They also monitor student progress and connect students with other services on campus. Additionally, OASIS serves as a resource to other academic and student service units on campus, as well as to faculty and professional advisors in the colleges and major departments.
OASIS is conveniently located on the 4th floor of Brookens Library, next to the The Learning Hub (formerly the Center for Teaching and Learning). The office features two computer stations that students may use to access registration information. The office also houses a library of four-year advising guides for all undergraduate majors and minors. Peer advisors are avaible daily on a walk-in basis and assist with common questions about major pre-requisites and curriculum planning. Appointments can be made with the professional advisors through Starfish Connect or by sending a request through email. The OASIS staff will connect you with other resources across campus as needed, all in the interest of supporting your academic success.
OASIS also administers three programs focused on supporting academic success in the early semesters of one’s academic career.
- Entering students are asked to take Placement Exams to ensure the most appropriate placement in their beginning classes. Scores from the placement exams give a more precise indicator of skill level, thereby allowing placement in courses for which they are best prepared.
- The Early Alert System is an early identification and intervention program designed to recognize students experiencing academic difficulties early in the semester and give them the resources to have a successful academic experience.
- The Peer Advisor/Peer Mentor Program provides additional support to help new students transition into college life through individual and small group interactions with a peer leader. New students who are undecided about their major are assigned a Peer Advisor that can help provide direction to many of the new situations and responsibilities. Students who are decided about a major are assigned a Peer Mentor who helps guide appropriate decision-making about courses and career paths related to that major.
