SCC Nursing Faculty Sixth Year Straight: 100 Percent of SCC Nursing Students Pass NCLEX Exam
The Shawnee Community College Licensed Practical Nursing program boasts a 100 percent of the NCLEX Licensure exams for six straight years. No other nursing program in the state has such an elite success rate. Exam results for the 2011 year were recently released, re-affirming the standard of excellence and quality of the SCC nursing program. WYSE Competition WYSE Academic Challenge
Shawnee Community College hosted the annual Illinois Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Academic Challenge on Tuesday. The challenge has been an annual event in Illinois schools since 1975. The WYSE Academic Challenge is an opportunity to challenge the area's brightest high school students in the subject areas of biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, mathematics, and physics. Community members were welcomed to a presentation of A Journey of Contemporary African American Artists, hosted by Shawnee Community College. The evening reception included powerpoint presentations of artworks by DeSande R, Najjar Abdul-Musawwir, Robert Ketchens, David Crim, and Malcolm McCrae. Final Score Online-Hybrid Associate Degree Nursing Opportunity
The 2011 Southern Illinois Online Nursing Initiative program pinning ceremony was held at the Marion Pavilion Center, concluding a year-long online program. The hybrid-online associate degree nursing program, allows students to complete coursework in a non-traditional setting. SIONI, administered through ConnectSI, was approved by the Illinois Board of Nursing in 2009. Final Score FAFSA the First Step toward Financial Aid for College
Financial Aid is any scholarship, grant, loan, or work program that helps to pay for college expenses. The mission of the Shawnee Community College Financial Aid office is to provide education and information, guidance, and support for students and families interested in the financial aid process.
The first step is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form, commonly known as the FAFSA. By completing this form, students are automatically applying for a Pell Grant, FSEOG, and MAP for Illinois residents.
Shawnee Community College financial aid representatives will be visiting area high schools during the month of February and March. for assistant in completing the FAFSA. More...

Main Street Floral in Karnak opened in January, providing trusted floral service the people in the surrounding area have come to expect from Julie Oliver. Bringing over 15 years of florist experience, Oliver, along with her mother Nita Hubbard and dedicated family members, can provide special occasion arrangements, holiday décor, gifts, and memorial items. Main Street Floral is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, and offers delivery services. The shop is located across from Wilson's Funeral Home. More...

Chinese Acrobats Perform at SCC Chinese Acrobats Return to SCC for Performance
The Chinese acrobat performance last week was attended by students from several area schools. The event was sponsored by the Shawnee Community College TRIO Educational Talent Search program. The TRIO Educational Talent Search Program is an academic outreach program designed to provide educational guidance to students in 6th grade up to 27 years of age, who wish to pursue further education or training.

The Alpha Lambda Epsilon chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa international honor society at Shawnee Community College recently held several "Pledge to Completion" signings on campus, as part of a national PTK movement for community colleges called Community College Completion Corps.
"PTK members at Shawnee are committed to doing their part to encourage fellow students to commit to complete," said Craig Bradley, PTK faculty sponsor at SCC. "So far, more than 130 signatures have been collected at our pledge signings, and more signings are being planned throughout the year." More...

Chili Cook Off The Results are In: Cook Off Winners
The Professional Development Committee recently hosted the annual SCC Chili and Dessert Cook Off. Faculty and staff sampled the entries and voted for their top choice.
First place winners for chili, Chris Clark, and for dessert, Madonna Slife, each received $25 cash, cook off winner apron, and bragging rights until next year. More...

SCC faculty, staff, and students came together for a group photo as part of the Wellness/Cultural Committe Pink Out. The event was organized to show support and commitment to fighting breast cancer. October was Breast Cancer Awareness month. Lisa Meyer, pictured second from the left, took home the $25 cash prize for the being the pinkest.

PTK Induction 2011 Phi Theta Kappa International Induction at Shawnee
The Alpha Lambda Epsilon chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa international honor society at Shawnee Community College recently conducted an induction ceremony, welcoming new members.
While not a requirement for membership, being formally inducted as a member of the Honor Society is a very special, once-in-a-lifetime experience. During the Induction Ceremony, students took the Honor Society pledge, signed the official Chapter Members book, and celebrated their academic achievements with fellow Phi Theta Kappa members, faculty and staff, friends, and family members. Race for the Cure Saints Read Literacy Program Launched at SCC
K-6 students in the SCC district are invited to take part in the Saints Read Program sponsored by Future Teachers Organization and the SCC athletic department. Area principals have been mailed reading logs to distribute to each elementary student. Students are asked to meet reading goals appropriate for their grade for two months. Verification must be documented on a reading log and returned to SCC through classroom teachers. More...

Race for the Cure Pattons, Belcher Join the Race for the Cure
The Susan G. Komen "Race for the Cure Series," raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship, and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease.
On October 15, over 30,000 survivors and supporters gathered for the Komen Race flagship event in Dallas, Texas. Among the participants were Karla Patton of Cairo and her husband Don E. Patton, who serves as Shawnee Community College's Board of Trustee Chairman. Joining the Pattons in the celebration was fellow board member Cathy Belcher of Anna. More...

Members of the SCC Art Club visited the Cedarhurst Museum in Mt. Vernon and the Southern Illinois Art and Artisans Center in Whittington in October. Mike Faris is the club sponsor. Chicago Boyz perform on SCC Day Area High School Seniors Visit SCC
Nearly 500 areas high school seniors attended the annual SCC Day at Shawnee Community College on Tuesday, October 11. SCC Day began with a general welcome in the gymnasium. Students broke out into separate into groups to participate in various activities throughout the day. Motivational speaker Rich Wolter spoke to the group using humorous illustrations, powerful insights, and charismatic delivery, telling students that all young people have to stand and be counted and that generations are either remembered for their passion, or forgotten for their lack of passion. SCC President Announces Retirement Plans in 2012
The SCC Board accepted the resignation of Dr. Larry Peterson, effective November 30, 2012. The board will honor his wishes to do so.
During his tenure, Dr. Peterson improved communications and programs with SIU Carbondale and developed the new location for the Anna Extension Center.
The board will undertake a thoughtful and comprehensive process for the presidential search in the near future. Details will be forthcoming. During this time, SCC will continue to strive for the best educational experience for our students, faculty, staff, and administration.
