Hornby Regional School 2012

In August 2012 British Council Sri Lanka in co-operation with the A S Hornby Education Trust will conduct the ninth Hornby Regional School in Sri Lanka. The A S Hornby Educational Trust was established to promote opportunities to study English, in particular in the teaching of English as a foreign or second language. The Hornby Schools are run with the support of the A S Hornby Educational Trust. The Trust was established in 1961 by A S Hornby, an English teacher in Japan, who authored the first Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (OALD).

The theme for the 2012 School is Essentials for the Starter Teacher. .

The course will be led by Adrian Tennant, who has over 20 years’ experience of teaching and training.  He has also written or contributed to a number of course books, including Inspirations, Move, Move Ahead, Synergy, Inside Out and Straightforward.   Adrian has previously worked on short and long-term programmes in Asia, Africa, Europe the Middle East and South America. He was course director of the 2010 Hornby School in Sri Lanka and India on “Bringing Grammar To Life.”

SCHOOL OBJECTIVES
By the end of the 5 day course, the participants will

Be more aware of (i) the essential strategies and approaches novice teachers of English need to use when teaching skills and language ; (ii) exploiting classroom space and resources, the course book and supplementary materials
Have shared, practical low resource classroom experiences and examples from their personal work contexts on (i) how to build inclusivity and trust in the classroom, (ii) how to use the learner as a resource and (iii) how to encourage the use of critical and creative thinking skills
Practised how to design training materials for use with starter teachers, including writing of rubrics for lesson plans and materials
Have planned appropriate sample lessons using local (country) textbooks as models for the starter teacher
Have increased confidence and build skills of participants in materials design and development
Have collated ideas, samples, lesson plans and materials into a booklet for use with starter teachers
