Registration open for “ Scoala pentru Democratie” Summer School

Are you aged between 18 and 26 years old and you to find out more about active citizenship? Register for  “Scoala pentru Democratie” Summer School organised by the British Council in partnership with Asociatia Pro Democratia, Konra-Adenaue-Stiftung and Expert Forum, at Hotel Eden in Predeal, between 24-28 iunie 2013.

Our trainers will offer guidance on how to become an active citizen, a leader with the ability to influence his community, capable to challenge the public authorities to solve the community issues in the benefit of its citizens. Moreover, we will support you in writing a project which aims to solve an existing issue within your community.

All the costs will be covered by the organisers. Participants will cover only 50% of the transport cost.

Registration is open until Wednesday 5 June. In order to attend the Summer School you have to send by e-mail to alina.constantinescu@britishcouncil.ro, a Curriculum Vitae and a project proposal for solving an issue within your community (city, school, faculty etc.). Your proposal must be maximum 1 page long and has to include the following: the issue, how it can be solved through a project, what would be the purpose of the project, what activities wouldtake part in the project, what would be the buget for the project itself and who would be part of the project.

Bsed on the two documents, we will select a number of 30 participants by 7 June.

Public talks with Irish journalist and writer Kevin Smith

Kevin Smith, an experienced Irish journalist and debut writer, will deliver public talks in Iasi and Cluj-Napoca about his novel “Jammy Dodger” which has been long listed for the Desmond Eliott Prize for best debut novel.

He will also take part in the British and American Studies (BAS) Conference in Timisoara.

English Literature seminars with Prof. Darryl Jones at the Babes Bolyai University

From 14 to 24 May Prof.Dr. Darryl Jones from Trinity College will hold a series of English Literature seminars for the  MA Brirish Cultural Studies students from the Faculty of Letters (Babes Bolyai University).

With a long-standing teaching and research interest in the 19th century novel and the 20th century literature, the general area of popular literature, particularly in the fields of horror fiction and film, and of Victorian and Edwardian adventure fiction, Prof. Darryl Jones published a monograph in 2004 on Jane Austen and edited the Collected Ghost Stories of M. R. James that was published by Oxford University Press in 2011.

The classes that will be taught in Cluj-Napoca will approach the 20th century literature by talking about the foundational texts of Modernism (James Joyce-A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man si T.S.Eliot-“The Love song of J. Alfred Prufrock” ) versus the texts of the bestselling writers (H.G.Wells, George Orwell) as well as different characteristics of the Victorian literature and, in particular, about the ghost story which is considered one of the most representatively English of all literary genres.

World-renowned linguist David Crystal to hold conferences in Bucharest, Iasi and Cluj!

Join us in celebrating the British Council’s contribution to English language and literature teaching in Romania and accept our invitation to attend the lectures given by the world-renowned linguist David Crystal in Bucharest, Iasi and Cluj.

David Crystal has published over 100 books and became known chiefly for his research work in English language studies, in such fields as intonation and stylistics, and in the application of linguistics to religious, educational and clinical contexts.

Concert Evan Parker
Extraordinary concert with Evan Parker, Lucian Ban and Mat Maneri

British saxophonist Evan Parker will be joining remarkable American violinist Mat Maneri and renowned Romanian pianist Lucian Ban for a concert at Odeon Theatre in Bucharest on 14 May, at 1900.

The event is part of the European tour for the launching of the “Transylvanian Concert”, an album produced by ECM, recorded at Targu-Mures Opera.

Evan Parker is a central figure in the development of the European free jazz and improvisation scene. Deemed as "one of the best ensemble improvisers" (Chicago Reader), he performed with pianist Cecil Taylor, and Coltrane's percutionist, Rashied Ali, he recorded with Paul Bley, played in the opening of Ornette Coleman, when his famous "Skies of America" premiered in the United Kingdom. Parker is very known for his solos for soprano saxophone, a series of works which focused lately on the perpetual exploration of special techniques such as circular breath, multiphonia and others.

Mihai Malaimare received the British Council Award at UNITER Gala 2013

Mihai Malaimare, Director of Masca Theatre, received the British Council award for theatre innovation at the UNITER Gala which took place Monday,13 May 2013, and was live broadcasted on the Romanian National Television.

A graduate of the “Jacques Lecoq” school in Paris, Mihai Malaimare is acknowledged for his role in opening new artistic directions in Romanian theatre, promoting a new language and the “conquering” of public spaces.

The British Council established its Award within the UNITER annual Gala in 1998 and has, hence, honoured diverse achievements, ranging from the contributions brought to the development of Romanian-British cultural relations, best theatre manager and productions of British contemporary theatre plays.
