Welcome to British Council Rwanda. Please browse our list of services and projects below.

Examination / Administration Services

Exams: we are the Rwanda base for IELTS examinations, we coordinate ACCA exams, and we invigilate university exams for Rwandese applicants to UK-based universities, such as University of Leicester – School of Management Exams, Cambridge International College etc. We also work with Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) and Edexcel to offer School Exams to Rwandan Education Institutions.

Learn English: Our Teaching Centre offers general, business and tailor-made specific purpose English courses to adult learners, as well as IELTS preparation courses. We work with corporates, ministries, donors, NGO’s, the private sector, and the public. Organisations can choose from bespoke in-house training solutions which meet their specific needs, or their staff can attend the regular courses held daily at the British Council.
English Development Projects: We design and implement a range of projects, mainly focused on supporting the Government of Rwanda. Our current portfolio and partners include; Innovations Project – the development of innovative resources to improve the classroom English of teachers in rural areas (DFID); TVET (PAFP-WDA); School Based Mentors including the use of audio devices (GoR); National Listening Standards development (GoR); National Baseline Assessment testing (DFID/GoR).
English Media Materials: In addition to our English work with educational professionals and their students, we seek to address the language learning needs of the general populace through our media products. These include TV broadcasts, print learning materials and radio.
English Language Radio: our Teach English, Learn English and Obla Air Learn English Series are broadcast on Radio Rwanda, Radio Flash, Radio 10, Contact FM, Ishtango Star Radio and Radio Izuba.
Other media projects: include the re-recording of the Teach English Radio series to appeal more to local listeners. Our re-recording now includes Rwandese narrators and traditional Rwandan music. This programme has been distributed to all the main teaching centres in Rwanda in all four districts, care of the Teacher Service Commission.

Connecting Classrooms: our international schools exchange programme encompasses all four districts in Rwanda (Kicukiro, Muhanga, Musanze and Nyagatare) who are partnered with Ugandan, Malawian, Kenyan and UK schools, including:

•Ubumwe – a 24-school partnership between Muhanga District (Rwanda), Lilongwe Urban District (Malawi) and the Highlands (Scotland/UK).

•Makino – a 24-school partnership between Kicukiro District (Rwanda), Malindi District (Kenya) and Nottingham (UK).

•Global Artists – an 18-school partnership between Nyagatare District (Rwanda), Bushenyi District (Uganda) and Durham (UK).

•Pamodzi – an 18-school partnership between Musanze (Rwanda), Zambia and Tanzania.

In 2013 we expanded the reach of Connecting Classrooms by building on the success of these clusters, as well as over 200 connections made through our former school linking program called Global School Partnerships.
DelPHE: The Delphe programme was a successful project which was implemented in several countries in the region. It ended in March 2013 and DfiD gave a very good rating. As the programme is now closed, there has been a selection of projects to represent each of the Millennium Development Goals. The selected case studies are from Uganda, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Sudan. The cases show how much can be achieved with a comparatively small amount of funding, partners that are well-matched and lots of enthusiasm and support from staff and students at the institutions who took part in DelPHE to make their projects work. Please view the DelPHE case studies document.
