About the Business & Career Institute (BCI)

The Business & Career Institute is your regional headquarters for workforce preparation, employee training, business development and technology deployment. BCI provides training, consulting, and economic and business development resources for the Chicago Southland.

For their efforts, BCI has been recognized as a High Performance Business & Industry Center by the Center for Adult and Experiential Learning.

A comprehensive selection of noncredit classes addressing professional and personal development is also offered. SSC's Cisco Regional and Local Academies, as well as partnerships with CompTIA and Microsoft, provide quality IT training for employees in the region.

Many local businesses have grown as a result of securing government contracts with the help of the Procurement Technical Assistance Center or by obtaining ISO 9000 registration through affiliation with the Chicago Manufacturing Center. Staff offers consultative training expertise and industry experience in developing employee training, managing workforce development programs, and locating funding sources to support training initiatives.

Courses, seminars, and workshops are offered on a variety of topics including computer skills, manufacturing quality improvement, Achieve Global Frontline and Working programs, workplace literacy training, and workforce skills assessment. Training is provided at the main campus, at the University and College Center in Oak Forest and on-site at the business.

Through the Continuing Professional Education and Short Term Training Division, specially designed programs are offered on a regular basis in order to assist community residents and organizations in keeping abreast of the latest in technology and its impact on our daily lives. Some of our newest programs are Truck Driving, Home Health Care, Food Processing Technician, Administrative Assistant, and web-based courses in many topics including manufacturing.

For companies with specialized or technical training needs, the Business & Career Institute staff will perform a thorough needs analysis and design a course which will meet or exceed a company's expectations. A qualified instructor (which may or may not be SSC faculty) conducts the training program in accordance with the approved training objectives and outlines. Once the training program is complete, an evaluation is conducted and the results are reviewed with a company representative to determine the training impact as well as future training needs.

A few examples of customized courses include interpersonal skills for salaried and hourly personnel, ISO 9001, TS 16949, Statistical Process Control, and computer network, operating systems or the newest application programs, which can be taught at the college or on laptop computers at your company.
