The Steel Bridge Club of CCNY qualified for the national steel bridge club competition to be held at the University of Florida in May. The College was represented by 13 students from the Department of Civil Engineering, led by club president Norbert Ochman, at the regional competition at Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday, April 5th. Professor Tom Price of the Civil Engineering Department is the club’s faculty advisor. CCNY won two of the three categories, including Bridge Stiffness and Bridge Efficiency, and came in second in the timed construction portion of the competition. The team finished second behind only the New Jersey Institute of Technology, who were powered by their strong first place finish in the timed construction. Other teams represented at the competition included the host Stevens Institute of Technology, The College of New Jersey, Cooper Union, Polytechnic University, and Rutgers University.

The Steel Bridge Competition is a national contest sponsored annually by the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Institute for Steel Construction. Each of the schools finishing in the top two at a regional competition qualify to participate in the two-day national contest. Teams representing student chapters design, fabricate, and build a 20' long bridge according to exacting specifications. The bridge is designed to carry 2500lb of load. Contest scoring is based on construction time, bridge weight, bridge stiffness, and aesthetics.
