POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES
The City University of New York is seeking a dynamic and innovative scientist with demonstrated leadership abilities and accomplishments to serve as Director of the CUNY Photonics Initiative. The Director will become a member of the City College (CCNY) professoriate and will also be director of photonics in the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC).
The Photonics Initiative, anchored at CCNY, comprises more than 30 faculty members from across the CUNY campuses, and more than 100 research staff members and students. Its more than $4-million annual research budget receives federal funding form DOD, NASA, NIH, NOAA and NSF and sponsorship from major corporations, including Corning, IBM Lockheed-Martin, Northrup-Grumman and Quantronix.
The ASRC, a research hub, will provide laboratory space and core facilities for CUNY scientist with the goal of fostering interdisciplinary research within an integrated university setting in the areas of Structural Biology/Macromolecular Assemblies; Photonics; Nanotechnology; Biosensing/Remote sending and Neuroscience. Construction of the new research facility to house the Center is underway on CCNY’s south campus. The successful candidate will be expected to teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students and serve on college committees. The Director of Photonics will play a pivotal role in establishing core facilities for CUNY’s photonics faculty, identifying diverse funding opportunities for collaborative efforts among the facility’s users and recruiting new faculty members.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Must possess a PhD and a record of exceptional intellectual and educational achievement and established reputation for excellence in teaching and scholarship in his/her discipline. The successful candidate must have an outstanding research and management record, leadership and communication skills, scientific prominence, a thorough knowledge of federal and industrial research support opportunities and a capacity to project a strong public image for the CUNY Photonics Initiative, both nationally and internationally. The candidate must have a desire and ability to encourage and foster collaboration among scientists and to identify promising new areas for research applications in the area of photonics.
